The Day, The Night
“Don’t get too close,” were the first words out of Chris’s mouth when he arrived yesterday. He was soaked wet with sweat.
On the way down from Virginia yesterday, the air conditioning in his car went out and (for some reason I still don’t understand) when he turned on the fan, it also turned on the heating coils. So when he got here, he was hot, miserable, sweaty, and pretty darn stinky.
I took his bags and sent him to the shower.
A few weeks ago, without warning, Chris showed up on my doorstep with bad news. After a series of strokes, his mother passed away. Then, in a state of shock, he got in his car and drove from Richmond to Raleigh-Durham to see me. He needed someone to lean on, and said that didn’t have anyone back home who fit that description. I was happy to help.
I drove back with him the next morning, and as we drove, we reforged a friendship that had been pretty much dead for 5 months.
Then a few days ago (after a series of events I’m not ready to discuss) he decided to come down for a couple of weeks and spend some time with me.
Once he was settled in, we had lunch and went for haircuts.
Back home, I got some work done while he played Wii and watched hours of South Park on my Tivo. Yeah, I like South Park, what of it?
Howie came over a little while later and took us out to dinner to celebrate Chris being back in town. The two of them together are a very potent combination of wit and sarcasm, not to mention how they bounce off each other and gang up against me. I love them both, so it’s okay.
The day then ended with me climbing in bed with Chris and cuddling up next to him. Even though we’re pretty undefined at the moment, I don’t have any particular problem thinking of him as live-in teddy bear.

The concept of a warm, male live-in teddy bear is just irresistible. What a lovely way to reignite a friendship–you’re both lucky men.
