A Sorta Fairytale
I’m about to unfold a fairytale. Ready?
Once upon a time, there was a very lovely young woman. Her name was Cassie, and everyone who knew her adored her.
One day, Cassie was set up on a blind date with a guy named Rick. She wasn’t the sort of girl who usually went in for blind dates, but she was feeling a little lonely and thought it wouldn’t kill her.
They arranged a time and a place to meet.
She arrived at the corner cafe early, just so she could already be there when he arrived. And, she waited. She waited, and waited, and waited. An hour later, and he still hadn’t shown up.
Upset that she had been stood up, she called his phone number and started ranting at the person who picked up the phone, not knowing that it was Rick’s roommate… and he had some bad news.
Rick stopped in at a little flower market to get her a sunflower; her favorite kind of flower. He thought it would be a nice icebreaker, and indeed it might have been if he hadn’t been hit by a car as he crossed the street returning to his car, only a few blocks away.
Cassie got the information about which hospital Rick had been taken to and rushed over.
After he was stabilized and mended, Rick lingered in a coma for several weeks. In that time, Cassie got to know members of Rick’s family quite well during her visits to the hospital to see if he was improving. After all, he’d gotten into this mess while he was buying her a sunflower.
The more time she spent with his family, the more convinced she became that Rick was indeed the perfect guy for her.
Then, one day, Rick woke up.
He was surprised to learn that she hadn’t left his side while he was in his coma, but he was grateful.
She helped him with his rehabilitation and as time went on, talk of a possible future began to become commonplace. They were planning a life together and it was going to be fabulous.
The day finally came when he was able to leave the hospital.
She got him home and settled in, and that’s when he pulled the rug out from under her. He told her that she was great, but that he wasn’t quite ready to settle down with her.
At first, she didn’t realize he was serious. I mean, they’d just been through so much and had spent the last several months talking about how many kids they were going to have, what their names would be, and where they would go to college… and he was breaking up with her now that he didn’t need her anymore?
She stormed out.
And she was so distraught that she lost her footing on his front steps and went tumbling to the sidewalk, adding insult to injury.
“Are you alright?” A voice called out to her.
She looked up and saw Thom coming to her aid with a hand outstretched to help her back to her feet.
And that’s how Cassie met the man who would become her husband… this weekend, in fact and I’m rather happy to report I am going to be one of her bridesmaids. Only, in a suit.
